Each year on the day of the Yahrtzeit, the soul is elevated through the actions of the living family, helping it rise to even greater heights. It is customary to light a 24-hour Yahrtzeit candle before sundown on the eve of the Yahrtzeit and to give charity on the day (except on Shabbat).

Kaddish

Reciting the Kaddish prayer is a significant merit and source of elevation for the soul. The Kaddish can be recited during the Maariv service in the evening, and during Shacharit and Mincha on the day of the Yahrtzeit.

L'Chaim

Some have the custom to bring a L’Chaim to Shule after the service to share with congregants. This provides an opportunity for the community to wish you long life and pray for the elevation of the soul of your loved one.

Aliyah

A special prayer can be recited in Shul on the Shabbat before the Yahrtzeit. It is customary to receive an Aliyah on this Shabbat as a symbol of the soul’s elevation. If you would like to receive this honor, please inform us in advance. (Aliyot can only be guaranteed if you are in Shule at the start of the service.)

It is also customary to gather the community on the occasion of a Yahrtzeit. This gives the community a chance to bless you and wish you long life. Opportunities include the weekly Kiddush after Shul on Shabbat and the Shabbos Mevarchim lunch, held once a month.

If you would like to sponsor a Kiddush, Shabbos Mevarchim lunch, or receive an Aliyah in honor of a Yahrtzeit, please contact our office by email at [email protected] or call us at 9488 9548.
