  • YAHRTZEIT

The anniversary of a person’s passing is his or her "Yahrtzeit." On this day we remember and memorialize the life and accomplishments of the departed soul, and rededicate ourselves to perpetuate his or her legacy and undertake additional good deeds for the elevation of the soul.

Torah should be studied in the merit of the soul; a time-honoured custom is to study Mishnah, the Hebrew word Mishnah having the same Hebrew letters as Neshamah, "soul."

In addition, extra Tzedakah, charity should be given on the Yahrtzeit for the merit of the soul’s elevation.

  • SPONSOR A KIDDUSH

It is always special when the community come together to eat, drink, relax and shmooze. By sponsoring a Kiddush in honour of someone or something, or just as a gesture of thanks to be part of a community, brings blessings and success to you and your family.

  • BAR/BAT MITZVAH

When celebrating a Bar or Bat Mitzvah we encourage the family to "Buy the Bimah."

This is a unique offer which allows the family of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah to choose who they would like to honour on this special day. This includes up to 10 honours, including opening of the Ark, holding the Torah, an Aliyah, etc.

  • MEMORIAL BOARD PLAQUE

Ensure your loved ones are remembered with dignity. We have a beautiful Memorial Board on display in our Shule with brass plates inscribing and eternalizing the names of departed loved ones.

Names inscribed on the plaque will have their Yahrtzeit observed in the following manner:

    1. Each year, a Yahrtzeit reminder will be sent to the person of your choice.

    2. If there is no family member present on the Yahrtzeit day to say "Kaddish", it will be said for you.

    3. The memorial light will be lit on the month of the Yahrtzeit and during all Yizkor services.

The initial cost for the plaque is $360.

Each year thereafter, a contribution of any size will be accepted on the Yahrtzeit day.

  • HONOUR OF AN ALIYAH

In all Jewish communities, it is considered a great merit and honour to be called to recite the blessings at the Torah. It is referred to as an "Aliyah," which means "ascent," referring not just to the climb to the platform upon which the Torah is read, but also to the spiritual elevation which comes along with this opportunity.

Furthermore, when one has an Aliyah to the Torah, all parts of one's soul, including those which are in the spiritual realms beyond this world, experience an elevation at that moment. For this reason, people vie for this privilege.

It is for this reason that it is customary to give a donation (as Tzedakah - Charity) when bestowed such an honour, to acknowledge how one values this special honour and to concretely express the effect of a Mitzvah through the funnel of Tzedakah.

Your contribution helps the Shule to continue to grow and thrive.

Many have the custom to contribute in multiples of 18, the numerical value of the Hebrew word 'Chai,' meaning 'life.'

  • HIGH HOLIDAY HONOURS

The opening of the Ark or an Aliyah over the High Holiday period is an exceptionally special honour. The Baal Shem Tov said that if we pray with sincerity when the ark is opened (or during an Aliyah), whatever we pray for is heard above, and answered either entirely or at least partially.

One can therefore understand the great honour during the High Holiday services, when we stand in awe, asking G-d to inscribe and seal us for a good and sweet year.
